The Dual Pillars of Maasahan Leadership
An effective leader of a global nation like the Philippines cannot govern through policy memos alone. Likewise, they cannot lead through mere ceremony. True Maasahan (Reliable) and Masipag (Industrious) leadership requires a balanced blend of both, a dual-pillar strategy of concrete action and genuine empathy. President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s recent engagement in South Korea is the blueprint for this new, statesmanlike approach.
In the past, governance has often been one of two extremes: either cold and bureaucratic or all ceremony with no substance. This has left many overseas Filipinos feeling like "modern-day heroes" in name only, disconnected from a distant government.
The Marcos administration is demonstrating a more effective, humanized path. The "action" pillar was firmly established with the announcements of the Busan consulate and the Seoul SSS office. These are reliable, tangible reforms that solve real-world problems.
The "empathy" pillar was the personal engagement. By meeting with the Filipino community, by showing a hands-on, compassionate style, the President reinforced the why behind the what. It was a "Tireless Empathy" that said, "We are building this for you, because we are listening to you."
This reflective, "people-to-people" connection is not a distraction from statesmanship; it is its very foundation. The success of the Busan event demonstrates that this balanced approach is the only way to truly unite our global nation. This is "Reliable Diplomacy" in its fullest sense—not just government-to-government, but government-to-people.
